about

This is the second album by Giants of Discovery following the debut album, Out of Time, released in March this year. These 8 new instrumental tracks tread a very different path to the Victorian cosmic horror of its predecessor. Although principally an electronic album, a range of styles and textures can be found across the album reflecting somewhat the differing ages of the tracks. Some of the tracks were inititally conceived around 3 or 4 years ago and then parked, waiting for other projects to be completed.

Late last year the album took shape when new tracks were composed and the older tracks were finished off, in some cases by simply finding the right spoken word sample to give musical direction to the track. The album, although not one particular style or theme musically, is given a sense of cohesion by the vintage spoken word samples used extensively throughout, imbuing a sense of nostalgia albeit with a slightly unnerving twist. I've always been a big fan of music that uses old spoken word samples especially from artists like Bill Nelson who, in the 80s particularly, used this device extensively on some of his albums. I wanted to produce an album where the voice samples were an intrinsic part of the whole, shaping the structure of the track itself and not just an add-on to a completed musical piece.

There is dark humour running throughout this album, as reflected in the very much tongue in cheek booklet that accompanies the CD release, which was expertly designed by the legendary Nick Taylor.

I really enjoyed putting this album together and I'm glad that some of these older tracks will finally get to see the light of day. The next album will be very different again in overall tone but there are hints of it in some of the tracks in this album.
